Alex rides a Kona Honky Tonk.

It’s a multi-speed steel frame bike with a sloping top-tube, a bit like the KHS Flite 220, and also a bit like the new All City Macho Man. I’ve got it set up now with Soma’s Noah’s Arc handlebars and a rear rack and pannier, but not long ago it had drop handlebars and my Carradice saddlebag. This is a versatile and reliable bike. I use it for light touring, long fitness riding, and daily commuting. It has a single chainring in front with an eight speed cassette in the rear, managed by a reliable old down-tube shifter. Fenders, u-lock bracket, Power Grips, front and rear PDW lights. Awww yeah!

With affection, I refer to this bicycle as my Hoopty. This is my do-everything touring and commuting bicycle. Sometimes we take meandering sunny rides together. With camping gear and supplies, I’ve ridden north into Quebec. I’ve ridden over the Appalachians. This bicycle has taken me over the Ozark Mountains, the Rockies and over the Continental Divide at a dozen different passes. I cruised over the Cascades like they were pancake-flat. This is the bicycle that took me to work this morning. This is the one. This bicycle has spent time on the front rack of Septa busses, and on the tank of a tanker truck.

This bicycle has an inexpensive frame. I have chosen each part carefully. I’ve built several wheels and I’ve replaced every component numerous times - sometimes because it was worn out, and sometimes just for fun. This bicycle is a stoic companion of the most reliable nature.

What bikes do we ride?
This is Kyler’s Raleigh.

My bike is a 1972 Raleigh Super Course, I think. Frame is Reynolds 531 tubing, the least expensive Raleigh from the era to be made of that material. Its components are mostly stock off of other road bikes from the era, but with some new parts thrown on like Tektro dual-pivot brakes and Soma Sparrow bars.  The rear wheel is converted to single speed cos, why not? Great for riding around the city with a backpack and/or handlebar bag and skidding down hills!!

What bikes do we ride? You’ve always been wondering what kinda bikes we here at Fairmount Bicycles ride, right? Well, here’s your chance to find out. More to come!Hey Folks. I am a Super Dark Green 2005 Surly Cross Check. I was originally owned by Peter Dalkner one of the artists at Birthday Street Comics (http://www.birthdaystreet.com/). Mr Dalkner sold me to Lenore Pipes where I had many exciting cyclocross races in the beginning of her cycling career. I have since retired with Tim and have evolved into the ultimate city commuting machine. Working front to back, I have a custom porteur rack made by Dan from Rack and Roll (http://racknroll.blogspot.com/), and a Novatech Dynohub running a Lumotech Lyt N Plus light.  I am navigated through the city by Velo-Orange porteur bars and my drive train is Ultegra set up as 1X9 with a Dura-Ace bar end shifter. My brakes are Tektro CR720s attached to the Velo-Orange City Brake Levers.  The current tires that I cruise through the city with are 700X38 Continental Touring Plus, but they are mostly hidden under the SKS longboard fenders that I wear to keep the street from my rider. Depending on Tim’s need for groceries or other cargo I will don a Surly rear rack with a pair of Axiom Panniers, but for a regular day I have a special bag for my front rack made by our friends at Swift Industries (http://builtbyswift.com/).  I am attached to Tim via Crank Brothers Egg beaters and he sits upon a Black Brooks professional, however you would never know since it is covered 99% of the time. We have been together now for 3 years and have enjoyed many rides around Philly and into NJ. There have been many long rides, short rides, wrong turns, flats and foul weather, but we always manage to have fun and get where we want to be.  I have more miles than I can count, and I hope to have many more.
